Cheapo Wino Review Wednesday! Angeline Cabernet

Angeline Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2011 – $14.99

Winery Tasting Notes: “Layered aromas of ripe cherry, cocoa, cedar, anise and baking spices lead into a soft, richly textured mouthful of cherry, vanilla and spice flavors. This wine is elegantly balanced, yet immensely approachable.

Food & Wine Pairing: Pair this luscious wine with roast beef, Cauliflower Au Gratin and garlic mashed potatoes. <—– This seems oddly specific

Kim’s Notes: I accidentally started tasting this at 4:30pm, breaking my “5:00 pm, to assure myself I’m not a closet alcoholic” rule. In my defense, it was a rainy and dark day…it felt like 5:01.

I found this wine to be fruity, sweet, smooth, and a little oaky. It tasted a lot like my old cheap favorite, Apothic. Notice I said “old favorite”, that’s because they both evoke a slight phlegmy feeling in the back of my throat that I no longer enjoy.  Maybe phlegm is the “richly textured mouthful” they were describing? All that aside, it’s actually a pretty good wine.

You know, this review reminds me of a little (and quite possibly boring) story…

I once splurged on these B.O.C. sandals:

I thought they were the most beautiful, comfortable, ‘goes with everything’ shoes ever! I made friends and family try them on, while I oohed & aahed over their floral wedge heel. I told anyone who would listen about their pillow-like soles. I regaled total strangers with stories of vigorous mall walking, without acquiring so much as a blister. Honestly, I put missionaries, and even cults, to shame.

So one day, at the end of the summer, I came across these same shoes on a clearance rack at DSW. I searched high and low for my size, all the while calculating how many pairs I’d need to last me until my deathbed. Sadly they didn’t have my size…but they did have my BFF’s size. I called her, no answer. I struggled with the decision, “Do I buy her a pair? Was she just being kind when she said she liked them? Hmm, she didn’t seem that into them.” You see, she’s a very kind person so I never know- with me, on the other hand, you’ll know immediately if I hate something, I get a shitty look on my face.

It was a tough choice, but I decided not to buy them.

Fast forward to last summer, I pulled them out…AND I HATED THEM! Ugh. They went with nothing! They were too clunky! Too unrefined! And so, I never wore them.

Fast, fast forward to this spring, I wore them out while shopping with my BFF, and guess what she said? “Hey, I really like those shoes! Where did you get them?”

WTF?! Are you kidding me, Joanne?!

Moral of the story: I obviously have great taste, and just because I’ve outgrown something doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it.

Cheapo Wino Review Wednesday! I review a white wine! Can you believe it?!

It’s that time of the week again! If you’ve been keeping up with me, you know that I’ve been reviewing only red wines lately because of my low carb diet. Well guess what? After my trips to Turks & Caicos and Madeira Beach, FL, my body is chock full of sugar and carbs! So I said to myself “Candy Ass (positive self-talk), you might as well indulge in a white wine before picking your fat ass off the floor (negative self-talk)and low-carbing it again”.

So that’s what I did.

Estancia Chardonnay, Monterey 2011 – $11.99

Winemaker’s Notes: “Chardonnay is made from grapes grown in our Pinnacles vineyard on the western flanks of the Gavilan Mountains in Monterey County. In this up-and-coming region, the cool climate and sandy, well-drained soils keep yields low and fruit intensity high. The cool Monterey climate accompanied by a long growing season produced a ripe, mouthfilling Chardonnay. Subtle oak accentuates bright fruit. A rich, fruity bouquet and soft, creamy texture of this Chardonnay result from combining the best attributes of barrel and tank fermentation.”

Kim’s Notes: “Oh, yeah! You won’t last long, my refreshing little friend.”

The moment this golden liquid (the color of straw, or diluted urine) touched my lips, I knew I would love it forever and ever. In fact, we’re getting married and he’s taking me to Monterey County for our honeymoon to see where he was born. What he doesn’t know is that I’m going to drink his whole damn family. Shhh.

On my first sip, I detected notes of pear, pineapple, vanilla, and butter. Mmm, it smelled delicious, almost like a warm perfume that I’d want to lick off my own neck. I’m actually wearing it right now, and I wish my tongue was longer.

By my third glass, I got out of bed, headed to the kitchen, and started thinking about which foods would pair well with my new love. Based on my limited pantry, here’s what I’ve come up with: popcorn, turkey jerky, Fig Newtons, croutons, cereal fruit bars, strawberry Pop Rocks, and salt & vinegar flavored crickets.

I’m just kidding guys…everyone know strawberries go better with Cabernet.

Cheapo Wino Review Wednesday! Josh Cellars

It’s that time of the week! Today’s wine…

Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2011- $12.99

Winemaker’s Notes: “Rich, aromatic dark fruits and baking spices delight the nose, yielding fresh plum and blackberry fruit, violet, dried fig, vanilla bean and Chinese Five-Spice. The wine is juicy with the plum and blackberry flavors prominent, layered with smoky and sappy maple wood, roasted almonds and hazelnuts, finishing long with fine, firm tannins.”

Kim’s Notes: “Mmm, as balanced as my mood after eating copious amounts of sugary carbs.”

This wine paired wonderfully with my favorite Eggplant Pizza and those five handfuls of chocolate chips that I ate directly from the bag. However, it was not compatible with being informed of my husband’s upcoming business trip…I detected a sourness when swallowing that news.

The flavors that I noticed were NOT Chinese Five-Spice, Mr. winemaker, (WTF? Are these chicken wings or something?), but rather berry and chocolate. It’s like Fruit Loops and Cocoa Puffs had a baby, and then they squished that baby until all of its red juices came running out. Yum!…if that visual doesn’t make you want to run out and buy it, what will?

Mid-tasting, Brian came strolling through the kitchen to find me drawing lewd pictures of a Fruit Loop and Cocoa Puff having sex- it was intercereal and it. was. beautiful! Closing his eyes, and my notebook, he suggested that I might want to approach this a little more professionally, “Maybe focus on the flavors detected on your palate?”

After wiping the “la di freakin da” taste out of my mouth, I took a sip, smacked my lips together, and declared (sounding like Patrick Star), “I detect light tannins upfront” sip, smack smack smack “It’s very smooth on the mid palate” sip, smack smack smack “and a tang just hit the back of my throat”, at which point Brian choked on his lemon water. Now who wasn’t being professional?

I would definitely recommend this wine, it’s subtle, fruity yet warm, and smooth…just like me (except my legs…my legs are rarely smooth).

Love me? Like me? Hey, even if you’re indifferent, I’d appreciate a click on this banner…thanks!
