Cheapo Wino Review Wednesday! Sweet and Creamy. No, not me.

Creme De Lys Chardonnay 2011 – $11.99

Winemaker’s Notes: The winemaker chose California vineyards that yield incredibly lush flavors of tropical fruit, baked apple and citrus.  Sur lie aging gives this wine it’s soft, creamy style.  Use of primarily French oak adds hints of vanilla and creme brulee on the finish, making this wine the perfect reward at the end of your day.

Kim’s Notes: Damn it, I wanted so badly to say, “Creme De Lys? More like Creme De Lie! Hahahaha”

But noooo, it actually was creamy and sweet, and “Creme De Truth” doesn’t have the same ring. Blah.

I drank my first glass on an empty stomach (as you should to make dinner preparations more pleasant), and I was a little surprised by just how sweet it was.  I decided to pair it with various food items to see if they changed the taste:

Potato chips = a little better

Cheese = still too sweet

Chocolate chip = Oh god, no!

More potato chips = not bad

Still more potato chips = getting better

Potato chips…

Needless to say, I was no longer hungry for dinner.

By the time I got to my third glass, I felt like it really mellowed out on the sweetness.  In fact, it started to taste almost full…complex…oaky…and that’s when I realized that I had subconsciously switched to Cabernet.  Hey, it happens. I’m like a homing pigeon, but with red wine.

I would recommend Creme De Lys only if you like sweet, sweet, creamy wines.  I know first hand that it pairs well with copious amounts of Sour Cream & Onion potato chips.  I can only assume that it does not pair well with diabetes.

Cheapo Wino Review Wednesday! Chateau Ste. Michelle

Today, I bring you another great wine that’s under $15, because we both know you should be saving your money for therapy.

 

Chateau Ste. Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 – $12.99 (Costco)

Winemaker’s Notes:

Our goal with the Columbia Valley Cabernet is to highlight concentrated Washington red fruit in an accessible style. This is our inviting Cab with plenty of complexity and structure with silky tannins. It’s also very versatile with food–try it with beef, pork or pasta.

Kim’s Notes: “It’s like an ‘Under $15″ fairy tale” (heads up: today I take a narrative approach)

He stood before me, chilly from the cold (our wine fridge was set too low). I brought him to me and held him tightly against my chest, warming his firm body against my flappy one. When I sensed that the time was right, I stared deeply into his dark soul and drank him in.

He whispered softly to me, “Chocolate…no..no…wait…berries…I mean, oak”. Oh, how I loved his complexity! In fact, I loved him so much that I decided to marry him…to a watermelon & Gorgonzola salad I found in the refrigerator. The bride wore balsamic. After the ceremony, they rode happily off into my esophagus, where I imagine they had beautiful sangria babies together. The End.

This wine pairs well with chocolate, pepperoni pizza, and disappointment.

Cheapo Wino Review Wednesday! A Petite Sirah

2010 Peirano Vineyards Petite Sirah Heritage Collection -$14.99

 

 

Winemaker’s Notes: 

“The senses are tempted by an array of blueberry, blackberry,

cocoa, and black pepper. The palate is filled with ripe blueberry,

blackberry, plum, sweet black cherry and chewy tannins, with a

hint of dark chocolate. Think of mom’s homemade blueberry

cobbler!! Enjoy this wine along with a nice grilled steak, baked

potato with all the fixings, and good friends. This is a wine that

can please now (<– I liked to be pleased sooner than later), as well as age out for many years to come.”

 

Kim Notes:

“The prune-like taste will surly get your bowels moving!”

‘Petite Sirah’ sounds so cute and dainty, but don’t let it fool you, it’s big, it’s bold, and it’s figgy!  While drinking this on an empty stomach, I noticed that it had a nice chewy flavor, one that I thought for sure would induce a full geriatric-like bowel movement.  Surprisingly, it did not. (*update: later, it did.  Maybe a coincidence?)

As I like to do my tastings on both an empty and full belly, I thought long and hard about what I should pair with this wine.  In the end, I decided on Honey Maid graham crackers, and that was totally the right choice!  It all came together, just like a delicious, liquidy Fig Newton.  Mmm, mmm, mmmm!

**That reminds me of the time US Airways served me a boxed lunch containing a breadstick, a cheese stick, and some jerky.  If you held all 3 together like Pick-up sticks, they tasted just like a bad turkey sandwich. 

I recommend this wine if you’re looking for something complex, chewy, and stimulating!

 

PS-  I wish I had a short friend named Sarah who drank wine, because I’d call her “Petite Sirah” and laugh, and laugh, and laugh at my cleverness!

Cheapo Wino Review Wednesday! Angeline Cabernet

 

Angeline Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2011 – $14.99

Winery Tasting Notes: “Layered aromas of ripe cherry, cocoa, cedar, anise and baking spices lead into a soft, richly textured mouthful of cherry, vanilla and spice flavors. This wine is elegantly balanced, yet immensely approachable.

Food & Wine Pairing: Pair this luscious wine with roast beef, Cauliflower Au Gratin and garlic mashed potatoes. <—– This seems oddly specific

 

Kim’s Notes: I accidentally started tasting this at 4:30pm, breaking my “5:00 pm, to assure myself I’m not a closet alcoholic” rule. In my defense, it was a rainy and dark day…it felt like 5:01.

I found this wine to be fruity, sweet, smooth, and a little oaky. It tasted a lot like my old cheap favorite, Apothic. Notice I said “old favorite”, that’s because they both evoke a slight phlegmy feeling in the back of my throat that I no longer enjoy.  Maybe phlegm is the “richly textured mouthful” they were describing? All that aside, it’s actually a pretty good wine.

You know, this review reminds me of a little (and quite possibly boring) story…

 

I once splurged on these B.O.C. sandals:

I thought they were the most beautiful, comfortable, ‘goes with everything’ shoes ever! I made friends and family try them on, while I oohed & aahed over their floral wedge heel. I told anyone who would listen about their pillow-like soles. I regaled total strangers with stories of vigorous mall walking, without acquiring so much as a blister. Honestly, I put missionaries, and even cults, to shame.

So one day, at the end of the summer, I came across these same shoes on a clearance rack at DSW. I searched high and low for my size, all the while calculating how many pairs I’d need to last me until my deathbed. Sadly they didn’t have my size…but they did have my BFF’s size. I called her, no answer. I struggled with the decision, “Do I buy her a pair? Was she just being kind when she said she liked them? Hmm, she didn’t seem that into them.” You see, she’s a very kind person so I never know- with me, on the other hand, you’ll know immediately if I hate something, I get a shitty look on my face.

It was a tough choice, but I decided not to buy them.

Fast forward to last summer, I pulled them out…AND I HATED THEM! Ugh. They went with nothing! They were too clunky! Too unrefined! And so, I never wore them.

Fast, fast forward to this spring, I wore them out while shopping with my BFF, and guess what she said? “Hey, I really like those shoes! Where did you get them?”

WTF?! Are you kidding me, Joanne?!

 

Moral of the story: I obviously have great taste, and just because I’ve outgrown something doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it.
