Cheapo Wino Review Wednesday

Cupcake Vineyards Red Velvet 2011 – $8.99-$10.99

a blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah

Winemaker’s Tasting Notes: “Our first blended red wine for Cupcake Vineyards has over the top aromas of chocolate, deep rich blackberries, red fruits that follow through the palate to a creamy mocha finish that is unmistakable in its intensity and length, with a hint of coconut. It’s reminiscent of a blackberry chocolate cupcake with a mocha coulis.”

Kim’s Tasting Notes: “Nom, nom, nommy in my tum, tum, tummy, Beotches!”

When I posted my first Cheapo Wino review, I asked my readers for their favorite “cheap” wine recommendation.  An overwhelming amount of people (4) suggested that I try Cupcakes’s Red Velvet.  At first I thought, “eh…looks too cutesy. They were probably suckered by the pretty label.” But then I thought “Meh…it’s on sale for $8.99. I should give it a try.” because, my friends, I can’t pass up a bargain.  I could be lactose intolerant and I’d still buy a diary farm if it was priced well below market value.

So after retiring to my bed (this is where I do all my best tasting), I poured it while reciting my life’s motto “Keep your goals small and your expectations smaller” (a sure way to feel accomplished and rarely disappointed).  I swirled, I sniffed, I held it up to the light, I didn’t know what the hell I was doing but I looked like a damn professional…if you ignored my Mickey Mouse pj’s and the cookie crumbs on my lap. Then I tasted it.  This shit is good! And not like “good for $9” good.  Good like “I just scored a Michael Kohrs dress for $29” good!

It smelled oaky (mmm, you know momma loves her oaky), it was smooth (like my legs after I shave for the first time in months), and it had a nice balanced body (the kind I hope to have one day).  The winemaker’s notes are dead on. However, I detected hints of raisin which don’t even appear in the description.  It makes me think I’m doing this whole drinking thing wrong despite years of intense practice.  Whatever winemaker, whatever.

This bottle of wine pairs well with chicken, pork, PMS, depression, really anything.  And it’s ready to drink now. No really, drink it right away because I noticed it gets a little bitter if it sits for a while.  In fact, if you’re drinking alone, I recommend skipping the glass all together and guzzling straight from the bottle.  But don’t let anyone see you do this or the next event you’ll be invited to will be your own intervention.

My Cheapo Wino Rating, on a scale of 1-4 glasses:  Um…I’ll take the bottle please!

2010 Horse Heaven HillsH3 Les Chevaux Red Wine – $10.99

(Blend – 80% Merlot 13% Cabernet Sauvignon 7% Syrah)

Wine Maker’s Notes:  “Aromas of fresh blueberries, anise and earth lead to firm and supple tannins on the palate. This red wine blend presents incredible depth, with layered flavors of candied nuts, licorice and dark chocolate that lead to a mocha finish featuring ample, sweet tannins.”

Wine Spectator’s Notes: “Supple and spicy, with a plush-textured, dark-hued, blackberry-rich mouthful lingering against creamy oak notes on the long and polished finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Drink now through 2017.” (90 points)

Kim’s Notes: “I’m so confused”

Ok, so you know how you go to your grandmother’s house on Thanksgiving and you can’t wait to eat the mashed potatoes because you just LOVE mashed potatoes.  The bowl gets passed around, you scoop a huge ass portion onto your plate and dig in.  Mmm, it’s fluffy, smooth, and rich…but wait…what the hell is that taste? WTF is it? Grandma?!

Oh yeah, she forgot to mention that she added radishes to them this year.  I did not expect that.  I hate radishes.  Thanks a lot.  But then you shrug and eat it anyway because you LOVE mashed potatoes.  Well, that’s exactly like this wine.

So I poured a nice big glass (it smelled nice and oaky), took a big gulp (a full, round feel in the mouth), then I felt Pop Rocks going off in the back of my throat.  Ok, not Pop Rocks but it was this huge peppery-ness (is that even a descriptor?).  It was kinda weird because the smell, feel, and initial flavor was very pleasant, it was just a few seconds of pepper after every gulp.  I winced a little every time but, needless to say, I kept drinking it.

Would I buy it again?…Meh, probably not.  Would I drink it if you served it at the next book club? Of course I would, duh.

*I decided that, like wine spectator, I needed a rating scale.  And since a wine bottle holds 4 glasses (so I’ve been told…all mine hold far less), I’m going to rate a wine based on how many glasses I would drink before switching to something else.

MY RATING

Drum roll, please…..

I give this wine 2 WINE GLASSES

But if you love pepper, this is the cheapo wino for you!

Cheapo Wino Review Wednesday

Today’s wine review is a white wine from the Washington region (gasp!). I bet you thought I only drank red. Well that’s not true, my friend.  Think of me as a swinger of the wine world- I have most definitely pledged my love to red, but a little white here and there keeps things exciting. *note- we are not swingers, so you and your husband keep that kookiness at your house.

2010 Columbia Valley Grand Estates Chardonnay – $12.99

Wine Makers’s Notes: “The Grand Estates Chardonnay opens with bright fruit aromas of apple and pear which harmonize gracefully with signature notes of caramelized sugar and butterscotch. Ripe fruit flavors are bolstered by lively acidity, yet balanced deftly with a subtle creaminess. The striking combination of rich flavors, ample body and refreshing finish make this wine a natural pairing for a wide array of foods.”

Wine Spectator Notes: “Polished, lively and refined, with pretty white peach, floral and oatmeal notes that come together smoothly and linger on the finish. Drink now through 2015.”   89 Points.

Kim’s Notes: “Burrrrrrp”

This stuff is easy to guzzle, creating air bubbles in my belly! nom nom nom…

Ok, my review…It opens with a slight crispness of pear and pineapple but ends with a subtle warmness, almost like the pears have been tossed in butter and the pineapples were used by cute little squirrels to polish their oak tree homes to a nice shine. Yeah, exactly like that.

and that’s how “Bust-A-Nut” Winery was born.

I have to agree with the winemaker, this wine pairs well with quite an array of foods.  So far I’ve tried it with cereal, Fig Newtons, chocolate chips from the bag, sour cream & onion chips, and those little mints they serve at my car dealership… all delish!

This wine is perfect to drink at brunches, play dates, prior to dental appointments, therapy appointments, etc.  To be honest, it’s really ideal for any daytime drinking situation.

Buy some and drink it today…no really today…before 5pm.

Psst…Please, please, please, click the little circle below and vote for me!  The contest ends today.  It only takes a sec.  If you do, I’ll be your best friend forever and ever (sorry Joanne, but I got goals to meet).  Thank you!

Cheapo Wino Review Wednesday

Remember on Monday, when I told you that my “7 things about me” would continue on Wednesday?  Well, I forgot that today is cheap wine review day.  Sorry to those that were hoping to read a story about my menstrual cramps or something just as insightful.

Today’s wine selection was brought to you by my local liquor store owner, Rocco.

The review:

Oracle Shiraz 2011  South Africa Coastal Region $9.99

Wine Makers Notes:  “This ruby-colored red shows delightful aromas of red berries and spice that emerge on the palate with a touch of oak.  A dollop of spice and all things nice.”

toutonselection.com Notes :”The Oracle Shiraz is a brilliant ruby-colored wine. It’s an expressive Shiraz with delightful aromas of red berries and an oriental spice that emerges on the palate with a melding of oak.”

Kim’s Notes:  “WTF, Rocco?”

Seriously.  After acknowledging its beautiful ruby color, I leaned in to take a whiff and holy hell!  I swear I could smell the feet that were used to stomp the grapes.

Rocco, you and your little yellow signs are dead to me.

Ok, now the taste…this is where it gets confusing for me.  Once you put the smell aside, the taste itself wasn’t that bad.  Overall, it was smooth, light, and low in acidity.  But damn, every time my nose went in the glass….Just. Damn.

I imagine it would pair well with other stinky shit, like swiss cheese and cabbage.

While this wine isn’t for everyone, I think it would be most appreciated by mouth breathers and allergy sufferers.  It’s also the perfect wine to take to your next Bingo night, grandma’s 90th birthday, an AARP meeting, or really anywhere with old people as their smell is the first thing to go.

CHEERS!

If you’ve had a great wine under $15, please leave it in the comments so that I can create a large Mommy’s Wine Resource Page.
